Pool Stabilizer, Saltwater Pools, and Algaecides
Maintaining proper sanitizer efficiency is important for preventing algae and maintaining clear pool water.
Stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid)
Cyanuric acid is commonly referred to as pool stabilizer. Stabilizer protects chlorine from rapid breakdown caused by ultraviolet sunlight. Without stabilizer, chlorine levels in outdoor pools can decrease quickly. Stabilizer is often introduced through stabilized chlorine products such as trichlor and dichlor. If stabilizer levels become too high, partially draining and refilling the pool may be required.
Salt Chlorine Generators
Saltwater pools use sodium chloride to generate chlorine through electrolysis. The chlorine produced in a saltwater pool is the same sanitizer used in traditional chlorine pools. Saltwater systems simply automate the production of chlorine.
Algaecides
Algaecides are chemicals designed to prevent or control algae growth.
Common types include:
- Quaternary ammonium algaecides
- Polyquat algaecides
- Copper-based algaecides
In a properly maintained pool with adequate sanitizer levels, algaecides are typically not required.
Green Algae
Mustard Algae
Black Algae
Types of algae commonly found in swimming pools:
- Green algae
- Mustard algae
- Black algae
FAQ
What does pool stabilizer do?
Pool stabilizer protects chlorine from being destroyed by sunlight.
What happens if cyanuric acid levels are too high?
High stabilizer levels can reduce the effectiveness of chlorine.
Do saltwater pools still use chlorine?
Yes. Saltwater pools generate chlorine from dissolved salt using a salt chlorine generator.

What causes algae in swimming pools?
Algae growth is usually caused by low sanitizer levels, poor circulation, or warm water conditions.
Do you always need algaecide in a pool?
No. A properly balanced pool with adequate chlorine usually prevents algae without the need for algaecide.
